Health Department to give H1N1 flu shots Thursday

Those residents who didn’t get to the Limestone County Health Department on time last week for an H1N1 — swine flu — shot will have another chance this week.

Melinda Adams of the health department said workers administered 474 inoculations Nov. 12.

The health department had advertised a two-day clinic for Nov. 12-13 on a first-come, first served basis, but ran out of vaccine by the end of the first day, Adams said.

There will be another one-day clinic from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

“We got some 400 to 500 doses in today,” said Adams Tuesday.

Adams said there would be no restrictions on who can get the vaccine.

“It’s open to everyone,” she said.

There is no cost for the vaccine, but if people have insurance, Medicaid or Medicare, they should bring their insurance cards for administration purposes.

Once again, the vaccine will be administered on a first-come, first served basis.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, for the week of Nov. 1-7, flu activity was widespread in 46 states. Nationally, visits to doctors for influenza-like-illness declined slightly from the week before, but were still very high.

Flu-related hospitalizations and deaths continue to increase and are very high nationwide compared to what is expected for this time of year.
