Organizer extends veterans parade deadline

By Kelly Kazek

Saturday’s local Veterans Day parade has as many as 50 entries but an organizer is hoping to see more patriotism from Limestone County.

The deadline to enter the parade was extended to Wednesday, said organizer Roxanne Haggermaker.

Anyone interested in entering a walking group, truck or float can call Haggermaker at (256) 374-2073.

“I think we’re up to about 50 or 60 now,” Haggermaker said Monday. “We have two floats — an honor flight float and Veterans Museum float.”

The Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives is looking for veterans to ride the float. To ride, call the museum at (256) 771-7578.

The 203rd Military Police Battalion of the local Army National Guard has entered the parade, she said. “It’s a great way to show support of local soldiers,” Haggermaker said.

Trophies and ribbons will be awarded for the best float, the best overall entry, the best truck, the best Auburn or Alabama car and — if there are enough kids who enter — the best wagon or bicycle.

“We still don’t have Auburn or Alabama cars,” Haggermaker said.

The parade begins at 11 a.m. Saturday and follows the Christmas parade route from Athens High School and through the downtown square to Hometown Grocery. Lineup will be from 9:30 to 10 a.m.
