A security alarm brought Limestone County Sheriff’s deputies to the New Cut Road Mini Mart about 1:30 a.m. Saturday. Security video netted an arrest.
Sheriff Mike Blakely said Joel Dwight Gooch, 24, of Athens attempted to burglarize the store by pulling on a rope he tied to the door handle of the store. When that failed he rammed the store with a vehicle, which shattered storefront glass and engaged the security alarm.
Gooch was later identified in the store’s security video by Limestone County Sheriff’s deputies. He is charged with third-degree burglary and second-degree criminal mischief.
Laundry trustee charged
Blakely said the county jail is also in need of a “new laundryman” following the arrest Saturday of an inmate trustee.
“The trustee, who helps do laundry at the jail was arrested because he had stolen another inmate’s tennis shoes,” said Blakely who identified the trustee as Michael Langford, 44, of Athens.
Langford, who is in jail on a bond revocation for a controlled substance charge, now has the added charge of third-degree theft, said the sheriff.
