DUI case continued to Nov. 19

The trial for a Killen man accused of driving under the influence of alcohol has been continued to Nov. 19, a municipal court official said.

William Hyatt Jeffers, 43, was scheduled for trial Thursday in municipal court but the case was continued.

According to records, Athens Police third-shift Officer Jason Threet pulled over a black Chrysler 300 driven by Jeffers at about 2:26 a.m. June 7 on U.S. 72 near Seven Mile Post Road in Athens after seeing his vehicle swerve and leave the road. His blood-alcohol content was 0.17 – twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent, according to records.

He was released from the Limestone County Jail after posting a $1,000 bond, according to jail records. His name and the DUI charge were published in the June 9 edition of The News Courier.

A copy of Jeffers’ ticket shows that Threet did not swear the complaint to the Municipal Court magistrate, June Whitt, until 38 days after Jeffers was arrested. What transpired during that time is unclear. The state Attorney General’s Office is investigating whether an Athens Police supervisor attempted to void Jeffers’ ticket. Threet is not under investigation.

Police Chief Wayne Harper said several weeks ago that the AG’s has not issued a report on the matter.
