UPDATE: Burned "jumper" causes widespread outage

— A widespread power outage in Athens this morning was caused by a “jumper” that burned.

A jumper, Athens officials said, connects two long lengths of wire at the top of a utility pole and insures the continued flow of power from one wire or line to the other.

The issue caused substations in the Athens District, Sixth Street and Strange Street to go down.

Power was out to about 5,467 customers from 6:33 to 7:46 a.m. Impacted areas included from Lindsay Lane down U.S. 72 to Limestone County Water and Sewer Authority. The southern portion of the city was also impacted.
