4Miles Scholarship deadline approaching

— The deadline for a scholarship honoring the memory of an Athens High School student is quickly approaching.

The Miles Blackwell Foundation will award the inaugural 4Miles Kindness Scholarship to 13 Athens High seniors in honor of Athens sophomore Miles Blackwell.

The deadline to apply is Feb. 15, and the scholarship winners will be announced in May. In addition to being a student at Athens High and a graduating senior, applicants must demonstrate “positive-impact involvement” in academics and community activities, according to the application.

The winners will be selected by the foundation’s scholarship committee and awarded a $750 scholarship disbursed to the college of their choosing.

Blackwell was an honor-roll student, an active community volunteer and a member of the track and cross-country teams for the Golden Eagles before being killed Dec. 10, 2011 in a one-car accident on Alabama 99.

Derrick and Rosalyn Blackwell formed the foundation last year to assist the community and embrace the spirit of their 16-year-old son. Miles Blackwell had a passion for adventure and travel and was known for his outgoing and cheery personality.

The foundation hosted the first annual 4Miles Kindness Gala Dec. 8, 2012, at the Roundhouse Depot in Huntsville. The black-tie dinner and dance raised more than $6,000 for the scholarship program.

“The gala was a wonderful event,” said Shannon Cameron, a family friend and a board member with the Family Resource Center, which co-sponsored the event. “Derrick, Rosalyn and Myia Blackwell and the foundation thank everyone for supporting this event in the grand style that we know Miles would appreciate.”
