Tree seedlings to be given away in Limestone County

Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful has partnered with the Alabama Forestry Commission to offer free trees next month to Limestone County residents.

The seedlings will be offered beginning at 10 a.m. on Feb. 16 at Big Spring Park in Athens until they are gone. Residents may request more than one tree.

Tree types include crape myrtle, dogwood, hop hornbeam (hardwood, understory, shade tolerant), black willow (not shade tolerant, best near streams/wet areas) and sycamore (intermediate in shade tolerance, den tree for wildlife). Other seedling types may be announced in the future.

Limestone County  is one of the areas to receive seedlings in an effort to reforest the state’s communities damaged in the April 27, 2011, tornadoes. About 3,000 seedlings will be given away in North Alabama this year in this second phase of the Alabama Tree Recovery Campaign. The effort is a large-scale, multi-year initiative launched in June by the Alabama Forestry Commission and the Arbor Day Foundation.

In an effort to restore the state’s urban tree canopy and the many environmental, economic and social benefits those trees provide, the campaign will continue tree distribution into the fall and winter of each year to other communities that suffered destruction.

Anyone can support the Alabama Tree Recovery Campaign by making an online donation at arborday.org/Alabama. For every dollar in donations, the Arbor Day Foundation, in coordination with the Alabama Forestry Commission, will deliver a tree for distribution to Alabamans affected by last spring’s tornadoes.
