After Limestone County Sheriff’s investigators received a tip Tuesday about two men possibly cooking methamphetamine at a home on the west side of the county, they decided to pay them a call.
When Lt. Lance Royals, Investigator Johnny Morell and Deputy Cody Lewter arrived at the home at 11140 Harrison Road about 11:15 a.m., they saw homeowner Juston Wayne Wray, 47, of Lester, exiting a shed near the back of the home, Royals said.
“I stopped to talk to him and noticed a strong odor of a recent meth lab,” Royals said.
Either Wray or another man, Ronnie Wayne Davis, 48, of Anderson, had thrown a two-liter plastic bottle containing meth into a wood-burning stove in the middle of the shed.
Fearing a possible explosion or fire, the investigators immediately secured the scene and called Athens Fire Department’s hazardous materials team to make sure the contaminate was contained and ensure there were no chemical vapors threatening the area, Royals said. West Limestone Volunteer Fire Department also assisted.
Once the coast was clear, investigators searched the shed and found lithium batteries and a cold pack, which Royals said were precursors used in the manufacture of meth.
Wray and Davis were arrested on charges of first-degree manufacturing methamphetamine, reckless endangerment (because Wray’s property is located next to Lighthouse Pentecostal Church and because investigators and firefighters were on the scene), tampering with evidence and possession of controlled substance. Davis was additionally charged with carrying a concealed weapon.
