One Nation Working Together Rally set for Oct 2.

ATHENS — Alabama NAACP State President Benard Simelton announced that the NAACP, together with more than 150 other organizations, have joined “ONWT, 10.2.10 Rally” on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington on Oct. 2.

The organizations include civil rights, fraternal, Masonic, human rights, faith based, labor, education associations, youth and many other organizations.

According to Simelton, this rally is in response to the floundering economy, new assaults on human and civil rights, and declining public school systems. The rally is to refocus our national priorities on greater investments in the wellbeing of all Americans. Participants will include individuals from east to west and north to south.

According to Simelton, the Alabama NAACP is leading the effort to organize those Alabamians desiring to attend. Simelton is asking other organizations to join in the efforts to organize supporters. Buses are currently scheduled to depart from Huntsville, Birmingham, Montgomery, and Mobile.

There are steering groups in these cities that are meeting to secure funding and build the coalition of supporters so that the trip will not cost anything except expenses for food, Simelton said.

“One ONWT happens at a historic moment in this country,” said Ben Jealous, president of the NAACP and national ONWT co-chairperson. “We have sparked a coalition that is truly representative and united –– conservatives and progressives, immigrants and native born people, college students and senior citizens, veterans and peace activists, believers and non-believers, unemployed and CEOs.”

“We are serving notice to all elected officials,” said George Gresham, president of Local 1199 of the Service Employees International Union and ONWT national co-chairperson. “We will march on October 2 and we will march again on November 2 into the voting booths.”

Simelton said those interested may call 256-444-1300, 256-426-6406 or email info@naacpalabama.org, or contact your local NAACP to obtain additional details and to sign up to attend. Also, visit the ONWT national website at onenationworkingtogether.org
