Rainey released from hospital

— Huntsville Hospital said Friday that Mac Rainey was no longer under its care.

Rainey had been in the Coronary Care Unit recovering from a heart attack he had during the Hospice Chili Challenge Saturday, Feb. 22.

Strangers and first responders witnessed Rainey’s collapse and rushed to his aide, performing CPR and applying a defibrillator located inside Athens High School. He was taken by ambulance to Athens Limestone Hospital, but later flown by MedFlight to Huntsville.

Rainey’s mother Paula expressed her gratitude to all the men and women who rescued her son in an email to The News Courier:

“Thanks does not cover my feelings to all who were involved in saving Mac Rainey's life this past Saturday at the Athens High School,” Rainey wrote. “If we had more caring people in the world like all of you, what a wonderful place this would be.  I wish I could give each and every one of you a great big hug from a grateful mother who still has her son because of you. Keep helping others as you did on Saturday. God has blessed us all.”
