HUNTSVILLE, Ala. —
Attorneys for a teenager charged with killing a classmate at a north Alabama middle school have asked that he be transferred from the Madison County Jail to a state mental hospital.
The Huntsville Times reports that the motion was filed by attorneys for 15-year-old Hammad Memon and refers to a letter written by the doctor who provides psychiatric services at the jail.
Memon is the son of Dr. Iqbal Memon, who had a pediatric practice in Athens and occasionally wrote columns on childhood illnesses for The News Courier, and Safia Memon. The couple lives in Madison.
Memon attorney Bruce Gardner said the doctor found that Memon was suffering from worsening depression and should be moved from the county jail. Memon is charged with the fatal shooting of 14-year-old Todd Brown on Feb. 5 at Discovery Middle School in Madison.
Assistant District Attorney Tim Gann said the prosecution does not oppose Memon being moved to a state mental hospital for mental evaluation.
