Three Limestone County Commissioners met last week with officials in Decatur, but the topic of the meeting is shrouded in secrecy.
All commissioners have signed an agreement with Limestone County Attorney Mike Cole, promising they wouldn’t give out details of what they’re working on to anyone, including the press.
Commission Chairman Stanley Menefee verified the meeting took place, but refused to say which Decatur officials he and Commissioners Gerald Barksdale and Bill Latimer met with. He said they did not all meet at the same time, so the meetings don’t constitute a violation of the Alabama Open Meetings Law.
“They went over there and met with some of the officials, and I went later that afternoon,” he said. “It’s a project and I can’t talk about it; not right now.”
He said more details could be released in the coming weeks or months.
Commissioner Gerald Barksdale said the commissioners are “sworn to secrecy” and couldn’t provide any more details than Menefee.
“You’ll know if it occurs, but if it never occurs, it never mattered anyway,” he said.
When asked why Commissioners Bill Daws and Gary Daly didn’t meet with the Decatur officials, Barksdale said there were reasons why they weren’t invited, but added they have also signed agreements not to speak about the secret future plans.
Commissioner Bill Latimer said the meetings may have had something to do with industrial development, but he refused to offer further details.
“It’s something like that, but it’s in the early stages right now and if we say anything and it gets in the paper, it could be disastrous.”
