MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — A Montgomery judge is considering whether to extend his order that has kept the governor from signing legislation to create private school tax credits.
Gov. Robert Bentley had planned a signing ceremony Tuesday afternoon for what he called the best education bill passed by the Legislature in years. But Circuit Judge Charles Price temporarily put any action on the bill on hold because of a lawsuit filed by the Alabama Education Association. The judge told attorneys to be in his courtroom Wednesday morning for more discussion.
The bill provides tax credits for parents who decide to put their children in private schools rather than failing public schools. AEA contends the Legislature violated the open meetings law and its own operating rules when it passed the bill Feb. 28.
