Alabama residents buying supplies they need to make it through times of severe weather will not have to pay sales tax for certain items this weekend.
Gov. Robert Bentley said Wednesday people need to take advantage of the break from Alabama's sales tax to stock up on emergency supplies. The holiday from sales tax will begin at 12:01 a.m. Friday and will run through the end of the day Sunday.
Items covered by the sales tax holiday must cost $60 or less with the exception of generators, which must cost $1,000 or less.
Several cities and counties — including Athens and Limestone County — have joined the state and are removing their own sales and use taxes from the covered items over the weekend.

Board approves Garris as new Elkmont principal
The Limestone County Board of Education approved the contract for Garth Garris, 44, during Tuesday’s board meeting. Garris was named the new principal of Ekmont High School, and he begins work June 24.

Low-performing list unveiled with 78 schools
No schools within the Limestone or Athens school systems were identified as schools needing improvement on the complete 78-school list revealed by state Superintendent Dr. Tommy Bice during a mid-morning press conference in Montgomery.
