With 85 years to his credit, Felix Lee Liveoak of Ardmore has seen a lot of presidents come and go. Fifteen to be exact — Coolidge, Hoover, Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Clinton, George W. Bush and Obama.
As chairman of the Limestone County Board of Voter Registrars, he has never seen so many Limestone County voters register to vote. The number of voters registered in Limestone reached 50,026 on Friday, a new high, Liveoak said.
The pending presidential election — now only five days away — has stirred so much interest, some residents were angered to learn this week they missed the deadline to register to vote Nov. 6. In accordance with state law, registration for Nov. 6 closed Friday — 10 days before the election.
On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, residents continued to arrive at the registrars’ office. Most of them, upon learning the deadline for the Nov. 6 election had passed, calmly registered to vote anyway so they would be ready for the next election.
“We had a few people raise a ruckus,” said Liveoak, noting the registration cutoff was well publicized.
