Gala, open house at new art center Friday, Saturday

— The new Alabama Center for the Arts will hold its grand opening Friday and Saturday in Decatur.

The Athens State University Foundation and Calhoun Community College Foundation jointly announce the official public opening for Phase I of the new art school. The 44,000 square foot, three-story facility, located at 133 Second Ave., in downtown Decatur across from the Princess Theater, represents an investment of more than $8.2 million dollars ($3.2 from each educational institution and $800,000 each from Decatur and Morgan County).

Opening festivities Friday

Opening festivities will include a gala fundraising celebration and reception Friday. The reception begins at 6 p.m. followed by the dinner and gala at 7.

Most tickets for the gala have already been sold by table sponsorships but a limited number of tickets are still available for purchase, said Gala Planning Committee Chairperson Terri Bryson. Reception-only tickets are $75 and gala tickets are $200. For more information regarding tickets, call Bryson at 256-890-4703 or Rick Mould at 256-233-8215.

Free open house Saturday

A communitywide, free open house coupled with traditional downtown activities are scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday. The Decatur Downtown Merchant & Business Association is planning an array of afternoon activities to support the grand opening.
