Yard sale will benefit boy with rare disorder

A benefit yard sale for a Limestone County boy with a rare genetic disorder known as Phelan-McDermid syndrome will take place at 7 a.m. Friday and Saturday at 1609 W. Market St. in Athens. .

The benefit will honor 2-year-old Elkmont resident Sawyer Moss.

Sawyer, the son of Hollye and Adam Moss, was diagnosed with Phelan-McDermid syndrome in December 2010.

There are approximately 700 known cases out of an estimated 6.75 billion people in the world.

Sawyer has autism and a severe developmental delay. He is unable to perform basic activities such as stable walking, dressing, feeding and bathing. He is non-verbal, which makes it difficult to communicate his needs, wants or feelings.

Sawyer’s family, including his brother Colton, 9 months, are trying to raise money to attend the International Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Conference in Orlando. A number of doctors from the Seaver Center for Autism — Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York will speak at the conference about new developments in an ongoing clinical trial being performed by the center.

While at the conference, Sawyer and his family will get the opportunity to meet other families affected by the syndrome. The Moss family believes meeting other families at the conference will provide an opportunity to establish relationships across the country and help them receive advice on resources that could benefit Sawyer in the future.

Hollye said the trial is promising for all Phelan-McDermid children. Sawyer’s parents hope the trail will be funded through a multi-trail at other centers and that Sawyer will one day be able to receive treatment at Vanderbilt.
