Lawmakers pass bill to pay for class supplies

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Gov. Robert Bentley says he will sign a bill the Legislature passed that will provide $300 to every public school classroom teacher in grades K-12 for classroom supplies.

The Alabama House passed the bill 103-0 Tuesday and the Senate later voted 33-0 to concur with House changes and give the bill final passage.

The measure was sponsored by Republican Sen. Greg Reed of Jasper and handled in the House by Rep. Bill Roberts of Jasper.

Reed said the classroom supply money will prevent parents and teachers from having to pay for items like chalk, copy paper and cleaning supplies.

Bentley praised the Legislature for passing the bill and said he looks forward to signing it.
