Athens State University will host its annual Flag Day ceremony, sponsored by the Athens State Alumni Association, at noon Thursday, June 14, in the Sandridge Student Center Ballroom.
Athens Mayor and Vietnam War veteran Ronnie Marks will moderate this year’s program. Marks was named mayor in 2010 after serving on the Athens City Council since 2004. He currently serves on the City of Athens Planning Commission, the board of the Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives, the Athens Limestone Beautification Board, the Limestone County Economic Development Board, the Chamber of Commerce and the United Way.
The Athens State University Community Band, under the direction of Dan Havely, will provide music. The singing group Threefold will also perform. The trio members are John Barnette, Brian Oaks and John Carwile.
Ronald Pettus will display some of his flags from the Civil War, Spanish-American War, World War I and World War II as well as other flag items.
"Each year our Flag Day celebration emphasizes just what the stars and stripes means to each of us,” said Lisa Payne, Flag Day Committee chairwoman. “Mayor Marks is planning a special tribute that will include all segments of the Athens population, each with an inspiring patriotic story.”
The public event is free.
