If you always wanted to earn an associate degree but couldn’t accommodate the traditional college schedule, Calhoun Community College recently launched a weekend program.
Terri Bryson, dean of Calhoun’s Huntsville campus, said the college would offer two degree concentrations — business and administrative skills.
The condensed, weekend program, called Taking Initiative to Maximize Education or TIME, begins in August and allows students to earn a two-year degree by attending classes only on weekends. The program is designed for students who have jobs, families and other responsibilities.
“Both degree options are designed to give students the skills they need in the job market, and both offer a pathway for transfer to a four-year university,” Bryson said. “We are excited about this new program and the doors it will open for those students who need some flexibility in their schedule in order to continue or start their postsecondary education. Our new, condensed, weekend program is ideal for those students who work during the week or have childcare challenges that might prevent them from attending class during our traditional times.”
Students enrolled in the program will take one class at a time in three-week increments, attending on Friday evenings, Saturday morning and afternoon, and Sunday afternoon. Classes will also include some online work.
Students will attend class for three consecutive weeks, have one weekend off, and begin a new class with the next three-week session. All classes will be held at Calhoun’s Huntsville campus, located in Cummings Research Park. For those who just need to pick up a class on the weekend, slots will be available.
Tuition for the TIME program is the same as Calhoun’s regular tuition. Financial aid is available for qualified students. However, due to the program’s sequence of classes, the frequency of a student’s financial aid disbursement may be altered.
Open registration for general fall semester begins June 13.
