Nuclear Plant Road work to start Monday

Starting Monday, the City of Athens Public Works Department will start directing paving operations and safety improvements on Nuclear Plant Road from U.S. 31 to Cowford Road.

“We appreciate the traveling public’s attention to traffic signage, speed and work zone safety during the project period,” said Public Works Director James Rich.

He expects the project to take about six weeks. Reed Contracting is doing the project for $1,034,101.

The city and county received a $1.1 million industrial access grant to improve Nuclear Plant Road. The Athens City Council and Limestone County Commission agreed to pay up to $250,000 each to cover costs beyond what the grant covers.

The road, which is the main route to and from Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant, has not been paved since the 1970s and is full of potholes and ruts. A sign placed near the intersection of Nuclear Plant Road and U.S. 31 last year read, “Warning Unsafe Road.”
