The Jiffy Food Store at U.S. 72 and Lindsay Lane is closed following what authorities believe might have been a microburst hit the building around 4 p.m. Monday.
High wind and rain created a debris field of several hundred feet between Jiffy Mart and the Lindsay Center across U.S. 72, said Athens Fire Chief Danny Southard.
“It took all the built-up roof all the way to the decking,” he said. “Torrential rain was falling and ceiling tiles were brought down inside the store. Water was pouring in and there was electrical arcing.
"It was pretty extensive damage and a dangerous situation. We were very fortunate, with the employees and other people in the store, that no one was injured.”
Emergency Management and Athens Police Department also responded to the scene.
