In celebration of America Recycles Day, which falls on Nov. 15 each year, Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful will hold an event to help raise funds to purchase bike racks for the Limestone County Courthouse Square.
KALB encourages area families to get their bikes ready and join them on a slow ride from Athens High School through historic downtown to the Courthouse Square. The ride will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 13.
There is no charge to participate but registration is necessary and can be done in advance at the KALB office or on the day of the ride. Riders are asked to wear helmets and arrive early if you need to register.
This ride is not a race. Roads will not be closed and riders will obey all traffic laws. The Athens Police Department has been asked to patrol the route to assist with safety.
Riders will congregate at the pavilion on the south side of Athens High School. The “leader of the pack” will take riders down Hobbs Street to East Street past the KALB office where “Old Spokes” who choose not to ride the entire route will join the group. The ride will continue on East, west on South St., north on Clinton, west on Washington and around the Courthouse Square. Riders will continue on Marion Street back to Hobbs Street, returning to the high school.
“Old Spokes” can return to the KALB office where they began.
There will be a refreshment break along the way, the location of which has not yet been determined.
The slow ride is meant to increase awareness of bike riding in the city and make motorists more aware of traffic laws that give cyclists equal right of way on roads.
“We’d like to see bike riding become a more common means of transportation in the city,” said Lynne Hart, executive coordinator of KALB.
Marsha Patterson, recycling coordinator, would like to see more people leave their cars and trucks at home and turn to their bikes for transportation or for pleasure and exercise.
Recycling for Cycling
KALB will accept donations of aluminum cans from America Recycles Day from Nov. 15 through Earth Day on April 22, with proceeds going directly toward the purchase of the bike racks.
A green cage trailer has been stationed at the KALB office at 125 East St., for donations of aluminum cans. “Currently aluminum cans are being purchased at the recycling center for 50 cents per pound,” said Patterson. “That money can add up fast if we all work together on this.”
Only proceeds from aluminum cans dropped off at the KALB office will be designated toward this project.
Another way the community can support this project is through the purchase of specially designed T-shirts. The shirts are bright green to increase visibility.
T-shirts are $10 each for all sizes, which range from youth medium to adult X-large. Shirts are currently available at the KALB office and the Visitors Center at 100 N. Beaty St.
