An insightful Limestone County Sheriff’s deputy was already checking out a suspicious driver Friday night when he learned the man also was driving a stolen truck. Shortly after 9 p.m., an Athens resident heard her truck start, so she looked outside and saw the vehicle heading north on Jefferson Street, Athens Police Capt. Floyd Johnson said. She called the police department, which issued a bulletin to all patrol units and other law-enforcement agencies in the area to be on the lookout for the truck, Johnson said.
Sheriff’s Lt. Guy Simmons just happened to be checking out the truck at Uncle Bud’s on Alabama 127 when the bulletin was broadcast, Johnson said. He suspected the driver might be driving under the influence.
Simmons arrested Brant Wayne Murphy, 29, of 19911 Piney Chapel Road in Athens on a charge of DUI and possession of a controlled substance, records show.
On Saturday morning, Sgt. Jason Threet charged Murphy with first-degree theft of property in connection with the stolen truck, Johnson said.
