Residents invited to make noise Monday at forum

— Limestone County resident Richard Nagel is looking forward to a forum Monday night in Athens where he will be able to question area senators and representatives about curbing noise in the county.

The Limestone County legislative delegation — which includes the two senators and three representatives who represent Limestone County residents — will attend an open forum at 6 p.m. in the Sandridge Student Center Ballroom at Athens State University.

The forum will be an opportunity for residents to question legislators or make comments on the topic of their choosing.

In Nagel’s case, he would like the Limestone County Commission to draft a noise ordinance to address nuisance noise such as incessantly barking dogs, load music or gunfire in residential areas. (Other counties in Alabama have enacted noise ordinances, such as Montgomery County.) Nagel believes Limestone could do the same without interfering with business, farming and other endeavors. In order to move forward, however, the commission would have to pass a resolution asking the local legislative delegation to ask the state Legislature to give the county the authority to create and enforce a noise ordinance of some kind.

Nagel would like other county residents who have — or once had — noise problems to either attend Monday’s forum or contact him at mrnagel@charter.net, or both.

Members of the local delegation attending Monday’s forum are state senators Arthur Orr, R-Decatur; and Bill Holtzclaw, R-Madison; and state representatives Mac McCutcheon, R-Capshaw; Micky Hammon, R-Decatur; and Dan Williams, R-Athens.
