Governor to delay early retirement measure

— MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley is asking lawmakers to delay introducing legislation that would provide eligible state employees with a voluntary retirement incentives program.

The measure was part of the governor's plan to save the state money.

In a release Thursday, Bentley said Alabama has saved more than $750 million in his cost savings plan, and the retirement plan is unnecessary right now.

Bentley says his administration is achieving its goal of right-sizing the work force without paying the cash bonuses called for in the early retirement plan.

If approved by lawmakers, the plan would either pay 100 percent of monthly health insurance premiums for five years or offer $15,000 in cash payments in two $7,500 installments.
