Gov. Bob Riley will be joined by officials from Calhoun Community College and Alabama Industrial Development Training to take part in the official grand opening and ribbon-cutting of the new Robotic Maintenance Training Center, Phase I of the new state-of-the-art Alabama Robotics Technology Park, scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15.
In June 2008, Riley announced the selection of Calhoun Community College’s Decatur campus as the site for the state's new Robotics Technology Park. When complete, the RTP will consist of three individual training facilities each targeted to a specific industry need.
Cost for the three buildings has been estimated at $73 million, including equipment, much of it being provided by robotics vendors.
In addition to the $17.6 million, 68,385 square-foot, Robotic Maintenance Training Center, the RTP will include the $8.5 million, 35,000 square-foot Advanced Technology Research and Development Center (Phase II) and the Integration and Entrepreneurial Center (Phase III).
Contractor for Phase I is G.C. Wyatt General Contractors of Birmingham. A groundbreaking event was held in June for the Phase II facility; EMJ Corporation of Chattanooga, Tenn., was the low bidder for this phase of the Park.
In addition to the governor, others expected to participate in next week’s grand opening event include Calhoun President Marilyn Beck, State board member Dr. Mary Jane Caylor, Alabama Community College System Chancellor Dr. Freida Hill, AIDT Executive Director Ed Castile, robotics vendors from across the country, state elected officials, and business leaders from across the region.
