An Athens convenience-store clerk and an accomplice have been charged with illegally using the debit card of a man who believed the card was old and had asked the clerk to dispose of it.
Sometime in August, a man who had been cleaning out his vehicle had entered the store, which Athens Police declined to name, and asked the clerk to dispose of some trash and what he believed was an old debit card, Athens Police Capt. Floyd Johnson said Monday. The man, who thought he had lost the debit card, had activated a new one and therefore believed the old card was useless.
“After the victim left the store, the cashier pulled the debit card out of the trash and laid it on the counter,” Johnson said. “The cashier later handed the card to another person who used the card several times.”
The cashier, Calista Idell Green, 32, of 16097 W. Glenn Valley in Athens was arrested Friday on a charge of illegal possession/use of a debit card, records show.
Chadrick Malone, 35, of 1300 Somerest Drive in Athens was arrested Monday morning on the same charge.
Each was released from the Limestone County Jail after posting $2,500 bail.
