Former Athens City Schools Superintendent Wayne Reynolds has joined the District 1 City Council race in Athens.
Reynolds, 65, qualified as a candidate Friday afternoon at the City Clerk’s Office, City Clerk John Hamilton confirmed.
“I always wanted to be in city government and this is an opportunity to serve,” Reynolds told The News Courier. “I have lived in Athens since 1988 and have been very active in supporting government, so I decided I would venture into politics myself.”
After retiring as superintendent, Reynolds became a registered nurse and worked at Athens-Limestone Hospital until a few months ago. A Vietnam War veteran, Reynolds is also active in serving veterans. He is national treasurer for Vietnam Veterans of America and state president of Vietnam Veterans of America. He also runs a consulting business in Decatur.
Reynolds and his wife, Carol, also a retired city school administrator, have two grown children — Wesley, an Air Force captain and physician living in Las Vegas, and Paige Reynolds Walker, who works at Redstone at Missile Defense. She has two children, Savannah and Stuart.
Prospective candidates for mayor and City Council have until Tuesday, July 17, to file papers to qualify as candidates and have their names placed on the Aug. 28 municipal election ballot.
Former Athens Police captain Marty Bruce also qualified to run for the District 1 seat. Incumbent Councilwoman Milly Caudle is not seeking re-election.
