Limestone County residents should steer clear of a letter that offers them a big check for shopping and then filling out an online survey.
It’s a scam.
Athens resident Mary Webb recently received a letter from Delaware Consumer Research & Management Inc., which included a $1,998.22 check from Delaware Racing Association. In a letter to Webb, the company claimed she had been selected to participate in a consumer research program in which she would serve as a consumer service evaluator.
The company letter states it is an employment firm specializing in conducting research and assisting corporations to evaluate the quality of customer service provided to their customers.
The company claims to represent more than 1,180 research firms across North America. “Your job description is to act as a customer in one or more of the outlet stores listed below,” the letter states. “You will evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of the customer service provided by the outlets.”
The letter also states, “Enclosed is a check for $1,998.22 to assist you with your assignment. It is imperative that upon receipt of this check, you contact Mr. Andy Rogers for activation. Failure to do so will result in automatic disqualification of your assignment. We will like you to complete your assignment within 48 hours.”
It tells the reader she can keep $300 of the check for completing the assignment, the rest is for buying goods at various stores, payments to western Union for the survey and fees.
The letter also adds the following warning: “Due to the confidentiality agreement we have with our clients, you are required not to comment or discuss your assignment with the staff in the store or at the bank, as it may jeopardize our set out goals and business code of conduct.”
Anyone who cashes this check and participates in the exercise will either be spending his or her own money or will soon owe his or her bank $1,998.22, because the check is fake. Wilmington Trust, which is listed as the bank on the check, confirmed the check is fake.
