— MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — A state senator plans to introduce an amendment to Alabama's constitution giving workers in the state the right to a job regardless of whether they are a member of a union or not.
Alabama already has a "right-to-work" law. But Republican state Sen. Gerald Dial of Lineville said Tuesday his proposal would give voters a chance to decide if they want to make "right to work" a part of the Alabama Constitution.
Dial said he plans to introduce the proposed amendment in the session of the Alabama Legislature that begins Feb. 5.
Dial's proposal comes after protests in Michigan over that state's legislature passing "right-to-work" legislation.
Thousands protested Tuesday as the Michigan Senate passed legislation to ban unions from collecting mandatory fees from those they represent under collective bargaining agreements.
