Community Christmas Dinner set for Dec. 22

— The second annual Community Christmas Dinner will be Dec. 22, according to event organizer Roxanne Haggermaker.

The free dinner will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Vietnam Veterans of America building at 17915 W. Elm St. in Athens. The general public is invited, and home deliveries will be available for Limestone County residents who are unable to attend.

“We’ll be serving turkey, ham, dressing, sweet potato casserole — all the traditional Christmas food,” Haggermaker said. “Santa’s going to be there and giving out stockings to the children, and the remaining stockings will go to Athens-Limestone Hospital.”

Volunteers will gather at the VVA building the week prior to the dinner to stuff the Christmas stockings. Small trinkets given out last year included jacks, miniature cars, yo-yos and dolls.

“The kids had a ball, and they were playing jacks out on the tables,” she said. “If people can just let us know how many children they will be bringing to the dinner, it will help us because we’ll be buying everything for the stockings. If we have any stockings left over, we will take them to the hospitals in Huntsville and Decatur.”

Haggermaker said volunteers are welcome to assist with meal delivery, food prep or serving dinner. Donations of food and small toys will also be accepted.

“We had 450 or so people attend last year, and we actually ran out of food,” she said. “This year we’re looking for business sponsors for the event.”
