Probate judge-elect to serve as grand marshal in Christmas parade

— The newly elected probate judge for Limestone County will serve as grand marshal of this year’s annual Athens Reliance Bank Christmas Parade.

Charles Woodroof was elected Nov. 6 and will take office Jan. 14, 2013.

The parade begins at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, at Athens High School and ends in downtown Athens. 

Woodroof, an attorney, is a partner of Woodroof & Woodroof, a family law firm that has served the people of Limestone County for more than120 years, he said. Before becoming a partner, Woodroof was assistant director of media relations for the Southeastern Conference Office (SEC) for six years.

Born and raised in Athens, Woodroof graduated from Athens High School in 1984, earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Auburn University in 1988 and a law degree from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in 1996.

He is married to the former Genie Johnston of Athens. The couple has two sons, 7-year-old Foster, who attends Julian Newman Elementary School, and Johnston, who will be 2 in February.

Woodroof is a member and past president of the Limestone County Bar Association and the Athens Rotary Club. He is a current member of the Athens City School Foundation board of directors and Athens Sate University Foundation board of directors. He is also a past member of the Athens-Limestone County Chamber of Commerce board of directors and the Athens-Limestone Clean Community board of directors.

He is a lifetime member of First United Methodist Church of Athens, where he has served as chairman of the church council, chairman of the long-range planning committee and a member of the board of trustees.
