Athens Police arrested two people Monday for allegedly trying to steal car batteries from Walmart.
Loss prevention employees confronted 25-year-old Rodtavius Buford of Trinity and 21-year-old Whitney Carden of Hartselle as they attempted to push a cart containing several batteries and other items out of the store, police said.
No attempt had been made to pay for the items, which totaled about $900.
Buford and Carden fled the store, but were apprehended by police before they could leave the parking lot. Both were charged with second-degree theft of property and were booked at the Athens Police Department.
Buford remained in jail Tuesday on $2,500 bond, while Carden had bonded out on the same amount.
Athens Police believe Buford may have stolen $1,300 in car batteries from the Athens Walmart on Saturday, Nov. 10. Those thefts remain under investigation and additional arrests are expected.
