County arrests
The Limestone County Sheriff’s Department reported the following arrests Monday:
• Marcos Castillo, 25, of 508 Frazier St., Athens, driving under the influence and giving false name to law-enforcement
• Debra Renee Davis, 45, of 204 Westlake Circle, Madison, two counts of negotiating a worthless negotiable instrument
• Terry Wayne Haggermaker, 40, of 16166 Nuclear Plant Road, Athens, public intoxication
• Jay Allen Montgomery, 26, of 27737 Sterling Road, Ardmore, third-degree theft
• Linda Darrell Scott, 42, of 22339 New Garden Road, Elkmont, DUI and no insurance
• James Calvin Moore, 37, of 1293 Mount Lebanon Road, Toney, violated probation on DUI
County thefts
The Limestone County Sheriff’s Department reported the following thefts Monday:
• Bicycle route signs valued at $448 stolen between July 31 and Aug. 3 from Easter Ferry, Shipley Hollow and Upper Fort Hampton roads
• Tyke brand toy chest and car seat valued at $60 stolen Friday from 23000 block of Black Road
• Utility pole and breaker box, total value $300, stolen between May 20 and Friday from 15000 block of Dana Lane
• 1995 Eagle Talon valued at $1,800 stolen Friday or Saturday from 12000 block of Nave Road
• $40 cash stolen Saturday from 27000 block of Alabama 251
• Burglary reported Sunday in 21000 block of Hickory Hill Lane; nothing missing
• Wooden boat, two life preservers, dip net, paddle, two rods and reels and a Case brand knife, total value $424, stolen Sunday from Hatchett Ridge Road along Tennessee River
• Two CDs valued at $30 stolen Sunday from vehicle in 13000 block of Bryan Hill Road
• AC adapter stolen Sunday from vehicle in 27000 block of U.S. 72 East

The Athens Police Department reported the follow arrests Monday:
• Bryan Oneal Merriweather, 35, of 1303 E. Elm St., Lot 28, Athens, third-degree domestic violence
• Saphilla Monique Allen, 29, of 1303 E. Elm St., Lot 28, Athens, domestic violence
• Rohn Everett Pruett, 55, of Mark Motel, Room 116, U.S. 31, Athens, criminal trespass and theft of property
• Mario Quixan, 26, of 210 Maple St., Athens, DUI and giving false name to law-enforcement officer
• Jose Juan Coriano, 29, of 1313 Wheeler St., Athens, public intoxication
• Tracey Lynn Malone, 37, of 17719 Antlers Pass, Athens, DUI and possession of marijuana
• Jacob Tyler Shelby, 18, of 124 Lauderdale County Road 307, Florence, minor in possession of alcohol
City thefts
The Athens Police Department reported the following thefts Monday:
• Fifty-six Lortab tablets, 56 Xanax tablets and a Swiss Army knife, total value $101, stolen Friday from 210 U.S. 31 South, Room 119
• Troy-Bilt brand red and black string trimmer valued at $139 stolen between July 24 and Saturday from 104 Theresa Private Drive
• Eight CDs valued at $59 stolen Saturday from Walmart at 1011 U.S. 72 East
• Motorola brand H700 Bluetooth headset and two slabs of spare ribs, total value $110, stolen Saturday from 1301 N. Jefferson St.
Hospital report
Athens-Limestone Hospital reported one admission and no discharges Monday.

Local woman dies in Friday fire
A woman who was badly burned when she was discovered in her unit at Elmwood Apartments by police and firefighters late Friday night died not long before midnight, authorities said.
Vickie Strasser, 52, was taken by ambulance at about 10:40 p.m. to Athens-Limestone Hospital with second- and third-degree burns over 95 percent of her body. MedFlight was called to rush her to Huntsville Hospital at about 11:30 p.m., but she died before the helicopter arrived. -
Athens Police make 14 arrests in Friday night drug roundup
Friday night was a busy one for Athens Police officers. While several investigators were conducting a roundup that resulted in 14 arrests, other officers responded to a fire call at Elmwood apartments (see story on today’s front page).
Lt. Trevor Harris said officers conducted search warrants at two homes — one at 1210 Plato Jones St. and another at 903 Brownsferry St.
Madison Police Department provided two additional officers and dogs from the K-9 unit to assist. -
Family displaced by fire seeking residence to rent
One family displaced by last Sunday’s fire at Athens Village Apartments is desperately looking for a home or apartment to rent in the area.
Scott Robertson and his wife, Amanda, and four children, daughter Jordan, 16; son Matthew, 14; son Dallas, 9; and daughter Lily, 5, lost everything they owned on Aug. 29 when an early morning fire — sparked by a cigarette thrown on a patio chair outside another apartment — destroyed all eight units in Building D of the apartment complex at 1711 W. Elm St. in Athens. -
TVA ranks in Top 10 for economic development
For the fifth year in a row, the Tennessee Valley Authority has been named by Site Selection magazine as one of the top 10 North American utilities for economic development achievement. -
Bank robbers remain at large in city, county
Athens Police are still searching for a white man who robbed TVA Credit Union on East Hobbs Street in Athens on July 9.

Woman burned in fire at Elmwood Apartments
A woman who was burned over 95 percent of her body after a fire in her unit at Elmwood Apartments was taken to Athens-Limestone Hospital by ambulance at around 10:45 p.m.

The Trinity High School Grand Reunion parade will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Athens.

Local resident Lt. Col. James L. Walker gathered biographies of some of these graduates as the school celebrates its annual Grand Reunion today and Saturday in Athens.

Part of Clinton Street in Athens to be closed at least 2 more weeks
Clinton Street in Athens, between Lee and Forrest streets, will be closed for at least two more weeks while Athens Utilities replaces sewer lines that are up to 75 years old, an official said.
