Officials probe E. coli outbreak in six states

ATLANTA (AP) — A mysterious and scattered outbreak of the E. coli bacteria is linked to 14 illnesses, including a child's death, health officials say.

No form of contaminated food or other cause has been identified in the illnesses, which occurred in April and May, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Three people were hospitalized. One — a child in the New Orleans area — died last week.

The reported illnesses were spread across six states. Georgia had five cases, Louisiana four, Alabama two, and Tennessee, Florida and California each had one.

I'll Have Another out of Belmont, retired

NEW YORK (AP) — I'll Have Another's bid for the first Triple Crown in 34 years ended shockingly in the barn and not on the racetrack Friday when the colt was scratched the day before the Belmont Stakes and retired with a swollen tendon.

"It's been an incredible ride, an incredible run," trainer Doug O'Neill said. "It's a bummer. It's not tragic, but it's a huge disappointment."

ASWA names Cam Newton pro athlete of year

It's possible no one in the game of football has had a better, more successful two-year run than Cam Newton.

In 2010, the 6-foot-5, 250-pound quarterback led Auburn to its first national title in 53 years, winning the Heisman Trophy, the Maxwell Award — given to the nation's top college player — and the Davey O'Brien Award — as the nation's top quarterback. He was also named an Associated Press First-Team All-American and the SEC Offensive Player of the Year.

Parents aren't monitoring their kids' mobile device behavior

Many of us who were born before the technological boom of the Internet era had limited access to information. If we wanted a peek into the larger world, only four avenues could be taken: the television, which usually had only three channels, the radio, books, and any newspapers that were available at the time.

But today's kids are facing an overload of information that's sometimes useful for school work or overall development, but sometimes the information can be harmful to their young eyes.

Woman arrested for visiting man through suitcase

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Police say a 50-year-old Oregon woman is in trouble because of her relationship baggage — but it's not the emotional kind.

Kola J. McGrath was arrested Monday for trespassing after workers at her boyfriend's downtown Portland apartment complex discovered the man was sneaking her into the building by hiding her in a large rolling suitcase. She was banned from the building last year for breaking a fire extinguisher case during an argument.

The Oregonian reports (http://is.gd/UYZv5c ) McGrath is 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs 96 pounds.

Police were notified when a caller reported a man had kidnapped a woman, placed her in a pink suitcase and taken her to the apartment building.

Officers then searched 52-year-old Curtis T. Lowe's apartment and found McGrath hiding in a closet.
