Members of the Limestone County legislative delegation may soon have an office to call home in Athens.
State Rep. Dan Williams, R-Athens, announced Tuesday that plans are in place to open an office on the lower floor of the Washington Street annex. He hopes to have the office open prior to the Feb. 7 start of the legislative session.
Williams said it would represent the first time the delegation has had a central location where constituents could visit with state representatives and senators. He said the hours of operation for the office is still unknown, as is who would staff the office and whether it would be a part-time or full-time position.
“When legislators come into the county, they can meet with people and … when legislators are away from the county (the office) can take calls, letters or whatever we need to keep in contact with people,” Williams said. “(The office) can also get in touch with state departments or whatever people have problems with.”
He said the need for the office could grow greater, depending on the outcome of the upcoming legislative reapportionment process. Williams does not serve on the reapportionment committee, but said Limestone County could wind up with another senator and representative.
“We need to realize these will be different (district) lines, but won’t go into effect until the 2014 elections,” he said. “The only input I’ll have is getting with the committee and giving them my thoughts.”
