The Athens City Council will name the city’s next fire chief at a called meeting at 4 p.m. today.
City Council members have interviewed nine candidates in their quest to replace former Fire Chief Danny Southard, who retired Feb. 1.
The council is expected to vote on a chief at the meeting, which will be held in the mayor’s conference room at City Hall, temporarily located at the Athens Utilities building on Wilkinson Street.
The public is invited.
The new chief will oversee Athens Fire & Rescue, which includes 40 employees and a $3 million budget. Starting pay for the job is $80,807.
The candidates, in alphabetical order, include:
• David Andrews, Athens Fire and Rescue battalion chief;
• Jeffrey Birdwell, deputy chief of Madison Fire and Rescue;
• Shane Boyd, battalion chief for Bessemer Fire Department;
• Rodney Hartsfield, deputy fire chief for Auburn Fire Division;
• Lorenzo Jackson Jr., Decatur Fire and Rescue battalion chief;
• Tony Kirk, Athens Fire and Rescue fire-prevention chief;
• Steve Shelton, Hartselle Fire and Rescue chief;
• Shey Spears, Athens Recreation Center coordinator;
• Roy Willis Jr., assistant chief of Birmingham Fire & Rescue Service Department.
