Chamber to help recruit low-cost air carrier to Huntsville

From Staff Reports

— Community leaders from Limestone County, Huntsville, Madison and Decatur plan to officially announce Monday a joint initiative to recruit low-cost air carriers to Huntsville International Airport.

Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce officials and their counterparts from the Decatur/Morgan County Chamber of Commerce, and the Greater Limestone County Chamber of Commerce will hold a press conference at 10 a.m. Monday at Adtran, said Limestone Chamber President Hugh Ball.

“Competitive local airfares are very important to our economy and are important to our personal budgets as well,” Ball said Friday. “You may have seen a recent news article stating that Huntsville International Airport for the first three quarters of 2009, had the highest average airfares in the U. S.

“It is estimated that a carefully selected low-cost carrier would lower annual HIA airfare costs by approximately 26 percent. HIA has been working diligently to attract a low fares carrier.”

Area Chamber officials will be joined by corporate representatives to outline the recruitment plan at the press conference.

The plan hopes to “expand air service development in the Tennessee Valley region while helping to stimulate economic development and ultimately saving the community millions of dollars with the addition of more competitive airfare.”
