Man accused of stiffing landlord with bad check

— An Athens man accused of trying to pay his landlord with a worthless check has been charged with theft, an official said Wednesday.

James Jerry Dunn Jr., 42, of 508 E. McClellan St., was arrested about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday on a charge of second-degree theft of property, records show.

“Dunn had written a check on a closed account to his landlord for rent,” Athens Police Capt. Floyd Johnson said.

Second-degree theft involves an amount greater than $500 but not exceeding $2,500, he said.

Dunn was booked at Athens City Jail and transferred to the Limestone County Jail, where he was also charged with third-degree theft by deception, records show.

He was released from jail after posting a $3,500 bail, records show.
