News Courier staff honored for public service

— The News Courier’s editorial staff was honored Saturday by the Alabama Press Managing Editors at a banquet in Birmingham. The staff won 22 awards in the editorial contest for work done in 2011, including first place for Best Community Service for coverage in the aftermath of the April 27 tornadoes. Honored for community service were Kelly Kazek, Adam Smith, Jean Cole, Lora Scripps, Kim Rynders, Ashley Hargrove, Phil Willis and Edd Davis.

“This award in particular means a lot,” said Publisher Ann Laurence. “It is indicative of how the community pulled together after tornadoes ravaged the county and how The News Courier staff was part of that effort.”

Remaining awards are:

• News feature, third place, Lora Scripps, for the Sept. 11 recollection, “Trip turns to horror.”

• Freedom of Information, second, Adam Smith, Karen Middleton, for “Limestone left out of loop.”

• Non-deadline reporting on tornadoes, second, Kelly Kazek, Adam Smith, Jean Cole, Lora Scripps, Kim Rynders, Ashley Hargrove, Edd Davis, Phil Willis, “Inside the Mega-Outbreak.”

• Education, first, Kelly Kazek, for “School Bible distribution complaint.”

• Lifestyles, second, Kelly Kazek, for “Deaf couple thankful to be alive.”

• Picture story, second, Kim Rynders, for “Inside the Mega-Outbreak.”

• Deadline reporting, second, Jean Cole, “Trucker hoped to save people from hell because ‘I’ve been there.’”

• Business, first, Jean Cole, “L&S: An icon closes its doors.”

• Non-deadline reporting, first, Adam Smith, for “Immigration law impact unclear.”

• Participatory sports, second, Lora Scripps, for Special Olympics coverage, “Ready, set ... gold!”

• Sports deadline reporting, third, Ashley Hargrove Graves, for “BCS Championship Games celebration.”

• Feature photo, second, Lora Scripps, for “Follies fun.”

• Sports non-deadline reporting, first, Adam Smith, “Iron Bowl 1983: A look back.”
