The News Courier’s editorial staff was honored Saturday by the Alabama Press Managing Editors at a banquet in Birmingham. The staff won 22 awards in the editorial contest for work done in 2011, including first place for Best Community Service for coverage in the aftermath of the April 27 tornadoes. Honored for community service were Kelly Kazek, Adam Smith, Jean Cole, Lora Scripps, Kim Rynders, Ashley Hargrove, Phil Willis and Edd Davis.
“This award in particular means a lot,” said Publisher Ann Laurence. “It is indicative of how the community pulled together after tornadoes ravaged the county and how The News Courier staff was part of that effort.”
Remaining awards are:

• Deadline reporting, second, Jean Cole, “Trucker hoped to save people from hell because ‘I’ve been there.’”
• Business, first, Jean Cole, “L&S: An icon closes its doors.”

Teacher to be honored by FFA
