Richard Petty wannabes, the over-served, cellphone-distracted drivers and other traffic scofflaws are being put on notice in Limestone County.
Sheriff Mike Blakely will be dispatching some of his deputies to all corners of the county to crack down on those who find it difficult to obey the rules of the road.
“In the last few months, we have been inundated by citizens complaining about people driving too fast in their neighborhoods and on many of our county roads,” Blakely told The News Courier Thursday.
Although sheriff’s deputies are not opposed to making traffic cases on any given day, they are typically too busy serving warrants and answering calls regarding thefts, burglaries, domestic violence and other crimes to run traffic-radar details, the sheriff said.
However, with the county’s population and the number of complaints increasing, Blakely said he would assign deputies solely to that task.
“There are a limited number of (state) troopers in our county, so we are going to have to implement people to concentrate on working traffic in these area, and people better slow down and abide by speed limits,” the sheriff warned, specifically naming Dupree Worthey Road northwest of Athens and Section Line Road in eastern Limestone County as targets.
Stepping up traffic-law enforcement will mean issuing overtime pay to some deputies so the department can address traffic problems and still cover other calls, he said.
