UPDATE: $1,500 reward offered in dog abuse investigation

— A red-nosed pit bull with a scarred face and forelegs wandered into a gas station parking lot in the Salem community Monday afternoon dragging an 8-foot, 22-pound logging chain that had been padlocked to her neck.

The part of the chain that encircled her neck was too tight and had become imbedded in her skin, causing infection.

The 2-year-old, 44-pound dog was about 10 pounds underweight, suffered from intestinal parasites and had scars indicating she may have been used as a bait dog by people who fight dogs. The padlock at the opposite end of her chain appeared to have broken, allowing her to free herself. Her life of abuse and neglect was about to change.

A Good Samaritan couple who saw the dog in distress in the northwest part of Limestone County, loaded her up and brought her to Town & Country Animal Hospital at 1642 S. Jefferson St. in Athens, Veterinarian John Hammons said.

A California non-profit is offering a $1,500 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person who abused this dog. Contact the Limestone County Sheriff's Department at 256-232-0111 if you have information about the owner or the abuser of this dog.
