After a week of legislative deliberations and delays, the Alabama Senate confirmed Athens State University’s board of trustees on Thursday.
The Senate Confirmations Committee approved Gov. Robert Bentley’s choices for nominees last Wednesday, and ASU officials were hopeful the Senate would approve them the next day. That was not the case, however.
Rick Mould, vice president for Academic Affairs, said the Senate delayed action on the board because of questions over other confirmations. He said there were no issues with any of ASU’s board members.
Those picked by Bentley to be on the board include Sandra Sims-deGraffenried of Orange Beach, former executive director of the Alabama Association of School Boards; Tazewell Shepard, a Huntsville attorney; Clint Shelton, publisher of The Decatur Daily; Maxine Randolph, a store manager from Elkmont; Arthur Orr, a state senator and pest control company vice president from Decatur; Macke Mauldin, a bank president from Sheffield; Winston Garth Lovvorn Sr., a large-farm operator from Athens; and Mary Dicken, a Department of Defense contract executive from Meridianville.

Board approves Garris as new Elkmont principal
The Limestone County Board of Education approved the contract for Garth Garris, 44, during Tuesday’s board meeting. Garris was named the new principal of Ekmont High School, and he begins work June 24.

Kevin Bryant of Turf Doctor Inc. has also been brought on board as a consultant for planting and overall design. Hart said Bryant is assisting the team with the science involved in growing healthy foods. Their main goal is to cultivate produce without using pesticides.

Low-performing list unveiled with 78 schools
No schools within the Limestone or Athens school systems were identified as schools needing improvement on the complete 78-school list revealed by state Superintendent Dr. Tommy Bice during a mid-morning press conference in Montgomery.
