Think your barbecue is the best?
Then you should enter this year’s fifth-annual Best Buckin’ Barbecue Cook-off April 23-24 in Limestone County.
Some $12,000 in prize money will be awarded, and proceeds from the event help the Boys & Girls Clubs of Limestone County.
“Think you grill some of the best pork, ribs or chicken around town?” said Joan Brunson, a member of the barbecue committee. “Fire up your grill and come down to the rodeo arena and prove it.”
The event is free to the public, but amateur teams will be charged a $125 entry fee and professional teams will be charged $250, she said.
Friday is the set up for the cooks, with the contest beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday.
The annual cook-off, held at the Limstone County Sheriff’s Rodeo Arena at 17836 Alabama 99 near Athens, helps kick off the annual rodeo.
Southern Crossroads, a local non-profit fundraising organization, is proud to announce the event.
Last year’s event, which is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society, drew more than 90 cooking teams from across the country to compete for championship trophies and prize money. Forty professional teams participated from as far away as Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio, Florida and New York. Amateurs came from all across Alabama and surrounding states.
Gov. Bob Riley has designated the event one of Alabama’s Championship Cook-offs, chefs can also compete in the Alabama BBQ Trail, Brunson said. Cooking teams earning the most points throughout the cooking season at various trail cook-off’s have a chance at the prestigious State Governors Cup trophy, she said.
