Limestone County came out in a big way for Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney and his running mate Paul Ryan, following the statewide trend with Alabama expected to be strongly in the GOP camp.
With a voter turnout of 67.6 percent of 50,038 registered voters, Limestone Countians gave 9,346 votes to President Barack Obama for 27.7 percent to Romney’s 23,953 or 71.09 percent. As of 10:30 Tuesday night, two boxes remained to be counted.
Late state returns had Romney at 59.2 percent over Obama’s 39.7 percent. Meanwhile, at shortly after 10 p.m., some national newscasters were projecting the election for Obama.
Don Bowers, one of the people who turned out at the Limestone County Event Center to be there for immediate returns, said he was “holding my breath.”
While Limestone went big time for Romney, Bowers said he was “not confident” about the national outcome of the presidential election.
“I have some optimism, but I’m over-confident,” said Bowers. “That’s for sure.”
Richard Lauderdale said at about 9 p.m., “I’m hoping for a landslide,” based on Limestone County results, but knowing the extremely close national race, he said he’d settle for “one vote” to sew the election up for Romney.
John Farrar, a member of the Limestone County Water and Sewer Authority, said he was optimistic for an Obama victory, despite the overwhelming local returns for Romney.
“I feel he stands a good chance,” said Farrar. “He was a good president and I think if he is elected to a second term he will do a good job.”
