Sequester's effects concern mayor

— Tens of thousands of federal employees are to receive their official furlough notifications today as part of the recently enacted sequestration.

Though it’s still not clear how contract workers at Redstone Arsenal will be immediately impacted, about 800,000 federal employees will be furloughed one day per week until Sept. 30. That adds up to 22 non-consecutive days without pay.

The end result will be a roughly 20 percent pay cut to affected federal employees. The Budget Control Act of 2011, signed into law by President Obama earlier this month, is designed to cut about $487 billion from the defense budget over 10 years.

Figures released last month by the Army estimated that 25,177 jobs in Alabama would be impacted for an economic loss of $1.9 billion.
