Washington County farmer struggles to pick crop before storm

. —

LEROY, Ala. (AP) — It's been a long couple of days for Washington County farmer Rod Richardson as he and his workers scrambled to pick 250 acres of corn ahead of Isaac's arrival.

Richardson said he had all but about 45 acres picked on his farm in Leroy about 60 miles north of Mobile late Monday afternoon. Isaac's rain is expected to start as early as Tuesday morning.

He said it's important to get the crop picked before the stalks are blown to the ground and the corn ruined.

Corn farmers have struggled in recent years with dry weather and other problems. But Richardson said this year's crop is plentiful and he said he has been offered a good price for it. He wanted to get as much corn as possible to market.
