Report looks at impact of fuel made from weapons

ATHENS — NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Department of Energy has released a draft environmental impact statement on disposing of surplus plutonium from nuclear weapons, including one alternative to use it as fuel in Tennessee Valley Authority's nuclear reactors.

The TVA cooperated with the Energy Department to analyze the impact of using the mixed oxide fuel at Sequoyah and Browns Ferry nuclear power plants in Tennessee and Alabama, but TVA spokesman Ray Golden said TVA still has not made any final decisions about whether to use the fuel.

There will be a series of public meetings on the report, including one Sept. 11 in Chattanooga and one Sept. 13 in Tanner.

TVA has said the fuel must be environmentally safe, economically beneficial and licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission before it will be considered.
