Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded two grants totaling $501,863 to help ensure that domestic violence victims in four north Alabama counties continue to have access to free professional assistance.
Crisis Services of North Alabama is using the grant funds to provide confidential emergency shelter and a 24-hour crisis counseling hotline for victims and their children in Jackson, Limestone, Madison and Morgan counties. The organization also assists rape victims with legal advocacy, support groups and case management through victim service coordinators.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grants from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice. ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, infrastructure upgrades, recreation, energy conservation, water resource management, job training and career development.
Bentley notified Bill Gifford, Crisis Services’ board president, that the grants had been approved. Matching funds of $125,465 are supplementing the grants.
